Smart Tags

  • Smart Tags was the answer for Rocketbook users who wanted more organization in the Rocketbook App. After scanning, users could assign a Smart Tag to a scan and reuse the Smart Tag for future scans. Smart Tags made it easier to search for scans and identify them even after they were sent to Cloud Destinations outside the Rocketbook App.

  • I created a survey and interviewed Rockebook users to better understand what they wanted when organizing their scans in the Rocketbook App. I designed and tested multiple prototypes in Figma, working with users to make the feature easier to understand and implement.

  • While many users still preferred to organize their notes in their personal Cloud Storage services, Smart Tags helped keep things organized in the Rocketbook App. It was especially helpful for users to search by Smart Tag to identify a group of scans rather than sift through a large list of scans.

Why “Tags” and Not “Folders?”

Some Cloud Storage apps do not provide any organizational features. This makes it difficult to implement a feature as robust as folders. When a Cloud Storage app does not support tags, Smart Tags can simply be added to the title of a scan.

What’s Next for Smart Tags?

Users wanted more features in the Rocketbook app that would bring it up to par with their other Cloud Storage apps. Smart Tags was the first step in this organizational journey, but users continued to ask for Folders, Cloud capabilities, and a companion Web App.

So… Folders?

I continued to ideate around organizing with folders in the Rocketbook App, which led to many promising designs and prototypes. I was especially interested in using folders to de-clutter the History Screen and make it easier to carry a group of scans to a third-party Cloud Storage app.
